2022 Trends in Tea

This year, astronomical spring will begin on Sunday March 20, 2022. On this day the northern hemisphere will begin to tilt more so towards the sun, giving way to increasing daylight hours and warming temperatures.

These warming temperatures can mean only one thing… Iced Tea Season is almost upon us! So, today we’ll recap 2021 tea sales and look at some of the expected 2022 trends for both hot and cold tea, according to the Tea Association of the U.S.A. Inc.

  • In 2021, Americans consumed almost 85 billion servings of tea, or more than 3.9 billion gallons.
  • On any given day, over 159 million Americans are drinking tea.
  • About 84% of all tea consumed was black tea, 15% was green Tea, and the small remaining amount was oolong, white and dark tea.
  • The U.S. continues as the third largest importer of tea in the world after Russia and Pakistan, and literally the only western country to grow in both tea imports and consumption.
  • More than four in five consumers drink tea, with Millennials being the most likely (87%+ of millennials drink tea).
  • Approximately 75 - 80% of tea consumed in America is iced.
  • In 2021, total U.S. black and green tea imports are estimated to be 240 million pounds. This represents year on year growth vs. 2020 of some 6%.
